The story of Lore

My name is Megan Thompson and I began Lore after 15+ years of working in the marketing industry, reaching the level of Head of Data & Analytics at a highly awarded, global ad agency.

Check me out on LinkedIn for all the details where you can also snoop on the reaction that I got when I launched my business to my network.

I’m passionate about bridging the communication gaps that exist in data driven marketing, making data fun for all, and making experiences for consumers compelling and ethical whether capturing or using their data.

My background is in Account Management and Data Planning/Strategy at local analytics companies, national customer engagement agencies, and global advertising agencies. I’ve supported a range of clients from retail start ups, charities, government bodies, right up to global FMCG conglomerates, and won awards for effectiveness and creativity.

I was lucky in my first role as I fell into an analytics company at just the right time to see the explosion of data in the marketing industry in the past decade.

Every business (agency and brand) have been frantically hiring who they call “data people” and sending their teams on “data training” - unfortunately what they often mean is analytics.

Analytics is a crucial part of data, but it is not the only part. And it’s often pretty gritty and confusing for those in the industry with a non-data background.

Without the strategic and operational skillsets covered too, many business aren’t sure why they hear that everyone is having success with data but they continually find it to be confusingly hard work.

As with any teams where the focus is only one one piece of the puzzle, or where there is poor communication between teammates, the environment becomes frustrating. Work grinds to a halt, and far too frequently, a huge volume of data is gathered from consumers against their will with no tangible value or use, damaging their relationship and therefore your bottom line.

I’ve worked in the strong teams who have clarity and respect, where a variety of data and non-data roles are hired and know how to communicate with each other. They produce award winning, high ROI experiences.

And, I’ve also worked on the projects which never made it out of the gate thanks to the plague of misunderstanding.

In my experience, to succeed with data, it needs to be viewed with human needs and experience at its core, with a focus on respectful and clear collaboration between disciplines.

In my previous role as Head of Data & Analytics, I was insanely busy and so I wanted to train my teams without absorbing all of my own time. I wanted them to learn how to talk about data, how to visualise it, how to inspire others and sell solutions.  But I heavily struggled to use my training budget. And through many conversations, I found my industry colleagues and clients were struggling too.

Everything I could find under “data” was once again focused on analytics which wasn’t what we needed. And whilst it’s valuable to identify courses to teach analysts further technical skills, nothing ever included teaching them how to explain them to others, find a valuable use for them, or sell them in to everyone else in the business.

So, I set up Lore to help bridge these gaps, to support analysts in making the best of their expertise, and to make data more fun and less technical for those who ordinarily shy away from it.

I love training and mentoring, and I strongly believe that both learning about and using data should be an engaging and simple experience.

If you’ve struggled with mis-communications, confusing, overly technical training, or you’re lacking confidence in how to work with data or to talk about it, you can check out my services here to see if Lore can help you.
